The 2010 season is the Club’s 35th anniversary and the schedule maintains a consistency with last season. “Yeah, consistency is really important,” says the club’s fixtures secretary Neil Clarke. “Drivers get used to racing at certain tracks and it’s good for the spectators as well as they will get to know the cars and some of the characters.” Racing gets underway on Easter Monday at Grimley Raceway in Worcestershire and then moves to Brafield (Northampton) on Sunday 25th. The reigning champion is Phillip Retchless (Wisbech) who took the 2009 championship in his front engine Peugeot powered Cheetah. Phillip will be back to defend his title and will again be joined on circuit by his sons Luke and Leon. This year’s World Championship will be staged at Brafield and it is expected that six time winner Klaus Kilianski will be over from Germany to defend his title.
One noticeable addition to this schedule for 2010 is a first ever visit to Knockhill where the cars will compete on the tri-oval. “Scotland is a long way for all of us,” says Clarke. “But it was a very enjoyable trip last year (to Cowdenbeath) and we’re really pleased to have the chance to make it a two day meeting – it makes more sense for us to go up for two days.”
Last year’s meeting at Cowdenbeath attracted some attention in the formula from some Scottish drivers who expressed an interest in racing themselves. “We’d love the Scots to start something up,” says club chairman Allen Herbert. “The club has been up three or four times over the years and it would be good to encourage this to happen. I think the guys we spoke to realised how cheap it is to build and race a Midget. It has to be one of the most cost effective classes on the short ovals.”

Grand Prix Midgets are one of the fastest and yet most cost effective race formulae on the short ovals. The cars are purpose built single seater racers built with safety in mind as much as speed. The class is unique on the short ovals as it features both front and rear engine cars. The formula caters for the engineer who wants to design and build his own car and the newcomer who might want to buy and race a ready made machine.
